SADIE2
FOUR MONTH UPDATE FROM SADIE’S FOSTER MOM
DIAGNOSIS: It is Dr. Purvis’ opinion that Sadie suffered a severe trauma resulting in nerve and bone damage and that lick granuloma is
secondary to that trauma. The tingling in her legs is a direct result of that nerve damage which caused her to lick and bite her legs.
Dr. Purvis has consulted with Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine and with numerous veterinarians and medical doctors, including
neurologists and dermatologists. He took new X-rays, a skin scrape and sent leg tissue to the lab for testing. Thyroid tests were performed and
Sadie was spayed in the event that either a thyroid or hormone imbalance was contributing to her condition.
DIET AND WEIGHT: Under weight at 54 pounds when Sadie came to Rescue, she gained a much needed 15 pounds and then soared to 79 while
taking prednisone. (An anticipated side affect of the steroid.) She is now on a diet and off steroids with a targeted weight of 70 pounds. Sadie
eats Taste of the Wild’s grain free Pacific Stream Formula with Salmon and High Prairie Canine Formula with Roasted Bison and Venison.
SUPPLEMENTS AND PRESCRIPTIONS: Sadie continues with Vitamins E and B6 supplements and a tablespoon of lard daily to help repair the
nerve damage and encourage tissue growth. Dr. Purvis prescribed numerous antibiotics that were taken for a period of one to three weeks.
Sadie’s E collar continues to be a necessity and she must wear socks at night so she doesn’t dig the collar into her wounds.
TOPICALS: Dr. Purvis recommended numerous topical treatments. Magic Cream (formulated by Dr. Purvis) and Vetericyn VF were the most
successful and Sadie continues on a combination of the two after one weeks of use resulted in significant improvement.
PROGRESS: On April 20th we hit a milestone when Sadie’s appointment frequency was changed from weekly to every 14 days. Her legs are no
longer cratered and have smoothed out considerably. The frozen ankle remains but doesn’t prevent Sadie and her Doberman foster brother from
romping and playing. Additionally, her urge to bite and lick her legs has substantially decreased.
SOCIALIZATION: Sadie continues to accompany me every where I go, including work. Last week-end we attended Southern Music Rising Music
Festival in Monticello where Sadie welcomed dozens of people who came up to greet her. She is a Velcro Dobie who loves everyone, is incredibly
sweet, loving and eager to please.
THANK YOU: Sadie requires constant medical care and management which would not be possible without Dr. Purvis’ wisdom and dedication or
without Tom and Betsy’s willingness to have her to accompany me to work.
